The great colonial history and the magical lagoons in the desert
São Luís, the capital of the state of Maranhão, although born of the French colonization, remains a valuable legacy to the Portuguese presence. Typical tiled villas, churches, monuments, balconies and squares were in uniform and magnificent architectural complex colonial history of unparalleled value.
In 1997, São Luís received by UNESCO, the title of Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The island of Alcantara, which is just 20 kilometers from town is accessible by river and has their own buildings which is a monument of the past that gives the nickname of "Pompeii Brazilian", and for its high historical value, was chosen from IRHAN as Monument City. But right next to an architectural presence as authoritative and dominant, São Luís gives its visitors the opportunity to experience nature in a tropical country like Brazil: the deserts of the interwoven lagoons, extending over 1500 hectares.
The desert white tight, which is between the blue ocean and the emerald green of the forest, one of the last virgin areas on the planet. The visit inside the National Park Lençóis (2 hours flight from São Luís) began only twenty years ago and is the expression of an eco-sustainable tourism, where the approach to nature and its performances is regulated in accordance with principles ethics of respect for the landscape and the enjoyment of it.
